and rebuild it with replica parts.  Old and new will look different.  Pull out the magnifying glass again and look for differences in the machining marks.  While the craftsmanship was good in the old days, they didn’t have computer controlled milling machines.  Look at the insides of the grips.  Again 150 year old wood should look 150 years old.  You may find serial numbers to compare.  New wood or new cuts on the wood would suggest replaced grips.  Again, an old frame fitted with new grips can be made to look alike a real antique.
I don’t mean to create a sense of paranoia, but be careful.  Be smart, ask questions and look over your potential new treasure carefully. All may not be what it seems.  

Now for the test.  Bellow  are two pictures of Colt Pocket Model Revolvers.  One is an actual antique.  The other is a modern replica that has been “defarbed”  While it is difficult to judge by a single photo, see if you can spot the original.  The answer is at the bottom of the page.
